On the Ganges Delta, the Sundarban National Park is a biosphere reserve forest in West Bengal known for its Royal Bengal Tigers. It is densely covered with mangrove forest, where the legendary Royal Bengal Tigers and saltwater crocodiles may be found. The Sundarban Tiger Reserve was established in 1973, and a wildlife sanctuary was established in 1977. On May 4, 1984, it was designated as a national park, and in 1987, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Sundarbans get their name from the Sundari trees that abound in this region. It is located in the southern 24 paraganas of West Bengal, encompassing an area of 2585 square kilometres and crossed by rivers and creeks.
